The ritual pledge to "preserve, protect, and defend the
Constitution" was made at 11:57 a.m. on Sunday by
Ronald Reagan, 40th President of the United States. The
ceremony was private because the Inaugural date required
by the Constitution fell on a Sunday, and good thinking
and planning dictated not scheduling it on the Sabbath or
Super Bowl Day. Nancy, in her flattering, patriotic "Nancy
Reagan Red" holds the President's mother's Bible. Jan-
