Our nation plunged into anguish at the news of the slaughter
of Marines at the Marine Headquarters on October 23, 1983.
Reagan joined French and Italian troops in a multinational
peacekeeping force. America was brought face to face with
the consequences of being a superpower intent on using its
military might to try to shape an unruly world. Some 1,200 to
1,400 Ú.S. Marines were brought in to: persuade Israel to pull
its troops out of West Beirut; pave the way for withdrawal of
all foreign military forces; restore a strong and stable central
government and achieve peace between Israel and its Arab
neighbors.
