THE CAYUSE INDIANS
A small tribe, the Cayuse numbered only about 500.
They had little tribal organisation, but lived in small, independ
ent communities, held together by a common language and sustoms.
Houses were frames severed by raad mats, and suld
tock ledge sheltered from 1 to 8
Because of the Cayuss's skill with horses, all western horas
come to be valled feeyutes
By the 1800's, the Cayuse, like other Plateau tribes
had adopted the dress and many of the customs of
the fridians of the Great Plains.

THE CAYUSE INDIANS
The Cayuse were a small plateau tribe known for
their skill with horses. In 1836 Dr. Marcus Whitman
founded a Mission among them at Waiilatpu, "The
Place Of The Rye Grass".
