THE COCKER SPANIEL is a sporting and family dog.
They originated in England during the 1870's and
acquired the name Cocker in 1902. Average weight
is 18 to 24 pounds. Originally bred for hunting
game birds in low, thick foliage. The Cocker Spaniel
is now perhaps the most popular of all dogs. In
1946 the American Kennel Club recognized the
American type as a separate breed from the English
type, for all United States dog shows.
