Fort smelling Block House, Minnesota. - Built in 1821, by colonel smelling, at the junction of the Minnesota and Mississippi rivers, which he named fort saint Anthony. The name was later changed to Fort smelling in his honor. This name was later changed to fort smelling in his honor. this vicinity was the scene of many Indian uprisings, among which was the Sioux massacre of 1862, 700 persons being murdered and 200, mostly women, taken captive.
