Whitetail Deer (Odocoileus Virginianus) The Whitetail Deer is America's best kown large wild animal, except in a few of the western States. Deer have increased at an astonishing rate in many states, coming back in areas close to the big eastern cities where they had been unknown for almost a century. In country where snow gets to be very deep there are sections in which the deer are too many for the winter food supply, which is chiefly white cedar boughs. There is a heavy loss of young Deer from starvation when the herds are permitted to become too large. The Deer gets its name from its "flag," a flashing signal as a Deer bounds through the thick woods. |
