Maiko (Japanese Dancers) in Jonangu Shrine. The name Maiko had been used before Genroku era. And it means a dancing girl of Edo, (Tokyo) in Kyoto. The dancing girl, Geisha, was developed in Tokyo since then, but the name Maiko has remained on the young boys, (Shogi) who used to wear furisode, (Long Sleaved Kimono) in Kyoto and now is used for the young girls who were trained for the dancing girls as the entertainers. |
