Council Grove is one of the most historical cities
in Kansas. Fremont's expedition of 1845 and
Doniphan's troop bound for the Mexican War in
1846 camped here. In 1849, when the overland
mail was established, it was a supply headquarter,
followed the next year by the regular monthly
coach service. Main Street is part of the old Sante
Fe Trail. Among the numerous historical markers
and monuments is the "Madonna of the Trail"
monument, a memorial to the Pioneer Mothers of
Covered Wagon Days.
