| Virginia - This massive granite fort served as the prison of Jefferson Davis for two years (1865-1867). Fort Monroe is a bastioned work of seven fronts. The moat is 1.6 miles around, eight feet deep and it ranges in width from 75 to 150 feet. The Fort was designed by General Simon Bernard, French Military Engineer and former aide to Napoleon. |
