KIRKLAND HALL was known as "Main Building" when Van-
derbilt opened in 1875. Almost destroyed by fire in 1905, it
was rebuilt and called "College Hall" until 1937, when it was
renamed for Vanderbilt's second chancellor, James H. Kirkland,
who was head of the University 44 years, 1893-1937.
