PACIFIC HOUSE AND CUSTOM HOUSE Monterey, California Facing the Custom House Plaza are two fine adobe and stone buildings dating from the Mexican and early American period in California. The Pacific House on the left was built in 1847 and has served many uses. Part of the Custom House (distant left) dates from 1827 and it used to collect duties from foreign shipping when Mon- terey was a province of Mexico.
