Series B-915 Columbia, a state park, was once known as the "Gem of the Southern Mines". It was the richest, noisiest, fastest growing wicked camp on the Mother Lode. With this handicap the camp soon grew into a metropolis, with 143 faro games, 30 saloons, four banks, 27 produce stores, 3 express offices, and an arena for bull-bear fights. Columbia has more ancient and fewer modern buildings than any other spot along the Mother Lode. The first gold was ground by Mexican Miners who had been run out of Sonora. On March 27, 1850 John Walker who was in a party with the Hildreth brothers found gold while waiting for blankets to dry, this find gave 15 pounds of gold per day. Today hundreds of people walk the streets to see a town that was M. P. |
