The Old Exchange Building, one of the most historic site in Charleston, was used to confine pirates in its bastile in 1718. It was later used as military headquarters. During the Revolutionary War, the Provincial Congress was set up here as the first Independent Government in America. Later in 1818 it was the Post Office.
