Cheapside, Chepe--of the Middle Ages--and one of the most ancient and historic streets in London, extends from St. Paul's to the Mansion House, and has always been a street of traders, John Gilpin, of ballad fame, was a "linendraper bold" of Cheapside. Here stood one of the Eleanor Crosses, which the Puritans pulled down in 1643.
