Series E-5622 Elizabeth City, N. C., located on Pasquotank River, is one of the most historic sections of the United States. Nearby are the Dismal Swamp Canal surveyed by George Washington, and Roanoke Island where in 1584 the followers of Sir Walter Raleigh landed and where in 1587 Virginia Dare, the first white child in America, was born. Also close is Kill Devil Hill, where the Wright Brothers experimented with the first aeroplane and at this place the government has erected a massive monument in commemoration of them. |
