JOSHUA TREE (Yucca brevifolia). This rare and rapidly
diminishing plant, a member of the lily family, is native
to the Western desert area. Although found in a few
scattered sections of Nevada and Arizona, it is most
abundant in the Joshua Tree National Monument, in Cal
ifornia. It frequently reaches a height of 25 feet and
an age of 200 years. It bears large heads of beautiful
cream-colored flowers in April. The Mormons are said to
have given the plant its popular name.-R. D.
