General To insure breadth is basic Education the University of Chicago offers the following four comprehensive courses: Introductory Course in the Biological Sciences, Introductory Course in the Humanities, Introductory Course in the Physical Sciences, Introductory Course in the Social Sciences. They are designed not only for college students, but also for men and women in the professions and vocations who sense increasingly the need of a broad foundation of integrated knowledge in order to interpret more truly the conditions and trends in our economic and social order and to understand the significance of the contributions of the sciences to daily life. The subject matter of each course is the same as that presented to students in residence in three fifty-minute lecture periods a week throughout the first year (three quarters) in the college. These four courses must be passed by all candidates for the College Certificate. Specialized Anthology of Latin Poetry, Christianity and Rival Faiths, Duties of School Principals, English Literature 1500-1660, English Literature 1660-1800, English Literature 1800-1900, French Prose Composition, Introduction to German Literature (I, II, III), Invertebrate Zoölogy (I, II, III), Methods in Teaching Home Economics, Personal Hygiene, The Bible as Problem Literature, The Dramatic Appeal of Biblical Literature. The University of Chicago has been teaching by correspondence 40 years. More than 450 courses are available. |
