The Barbel (Barbus vulgaris) lives at the bottom of gently flowing rivers, and searches forits food roting among the stones. It reaches a considerable size, being bound in he Thames up to 12lbs and more. The Perch is one of the handsomest of British freshwater fishes. It prefers ponds, or rivers where the current is slow. The uffe or Pope is usually 3 or 4 inches in length, sometimes reaching 7 inches or more. It lives in shoals in deepish water in coal, shady places."
