Sir Joshua Reynolds, P. R. A., the great portrait and subject painter, was born at Plympton Earls, near Plymouth, on 16th July, 1723. After various continental visits, he finally settled in London in 1752, and quickly became the most popular portrait painter of the day. His authentic works are estimated to number between two and three thousand. He died on 23rd February, 1792. His picture of Mrs. Carnac is in the Wallace Collection." |
