Geronimo, last of the great chiefs of the
Dragoon-Chiricahua Apaches, was notorious
because of his unceasing war on white settlers
and prospectors. For 10 years scouting parties
of the U.S. 4th and 6th Cavalry were en-
gaged with Geronimo and his murderous
band. Captured several times, he always es-
caped. Finally in 1886 he was tracked down
at Fronteras, Mexico, returned to Arizona Ter-
ritory, and surrendered to General Miles who
banished him to Florida.
