When the sun has gone down there comes
upon the desert a soft, suffusing light, the
afterglow, which is its chiefest charm. The
light fades slowly and with twilight comes the
ever present purple haze, as indescribable as
it is indefinite, that half-veils the horizon and
tinges the middle distances. One forgets the
dreary stretches of sand and alkali, the gleam-
ing sun, the scorching wind, the thirsty vege-
tation that all belong to desert, in the
fascination of the first shadows of evening.
