Chicago River looking South from Adams Street
Additional Details:
Series No. 14
Looking south from the Adams Street bridge, showing the Jackson Boulevard bridge, recently completed. The Chicago River originally emptied into Lake Michigan, but, with the completion of the drainage canal, connecting the Great Lakes with the Mississippi River basin, its flow was reversed. The original mouth of the river is now its source, and water from Lake Michigan is being emptied into the Gulf of Mexico. New bridges of beautiful design are replacing the old structures, and the course of the river is being straightened and improved, so that the "Chicago River Beautiful" plan is rapidly being realized |
