Marshall's cabin is located a short distance below his grave and across the road from the church where he went to services. Marshall lived in the cabin from 1848 to 1868. It was John Marshall who discovered gold here while turning the water off on Sutter's Sawmill on Jan. 24, 1848. While this was not the first discovery of gold in California it was the one that started the gold-rush to the west. The discovery won Marshall only hard luck. Others swarmed over Marshall's claims and posted armed guards to keep him off his own claims. When he appealed to courts, friends of the trespassers sat as judge and jury; even his own attorneys sold him out. Marshall died in poverty on Aug. 10, 1885, and was buried on a small hill overlooking the site where he made his find...M.P Dexter |
