A Brief History of the Central Railroad Co.
of N.J.
Its predecessor companies go back some 143
years to the Elizabethtown & Somerville Rail-
Iway Co., incorporated in 1831. It is one of the
oldest railroads in the U.S. Was the first rail-
road to furnish regulation uniforms to passen-
ger conductors in 1872. First to operate fully
automatic semaphore signals in U.S. in 1893.
First Railroad to operate a diesel-electric loco-
motive in 1925. First to use T.V. as an Indus-
trial Application. Its Newark Bay Draw Bridge
is one & two fifths miles long. Believed to be
the longest of its type in the world. Has the
largest Piggyback Terminal in the Port Newark
Complex.
