The Original Washington was founded on the 337 acres granted
to Christopher Dudley in 1726. The City was incorporated by the
General Assembly at Hillsboro in 1782. Washington is located
on the North side of the Pamlico River and is the head of naviga-
tion of this stream. It has a twelve foot channel connecting with
the Intracoastal Waterway and, via Pamlico Sound, with the
Atlantic Ocean.
