HIWASSEE DAM Built in a rugged gorge and in a section of the North Carolina Mountains noted for its beautiful scenery, the dam is the highest over- flow dam of its type in the world and the highest dam of any type in the United States • east of the Mississippi River. It is 322 feet high and 1,265 feet long. A lake, created by the dam, covers 6,400 acres, has a shoreline of 161/2 miles, and reaches to Murphy more than 20 miles away. HARRY N. MARTIN, P. O.
