JUDACULLA ROCK
By Larry W. Mull
Near Cowarts, N.C., stands Judaculla Rock in-
scribed with weird markings and drawings.
The rock is embedded deeply in the ground so
its thickness is unknown, but it is about 40 feet
in circumference. Across the face of the rock
are many carvings made by Indians of a past
age. One resembles a balsam tree; one a
horned owl; another one like an Indian wig-
wam - and for this reason this historical rock
has long been an object of great interest to
scientists and others interested in Indian lore.
There are several legends in regard to this
rock, but a Cherokee Chieftain has made a
study of the carvings, and pronounces them to
be a peace-record treaty between the Cherokee
and Catawba Indians.
