Series 138746 First Shaniko Post Office opened March 31, 1900 with John Wilcox first postmaster. In 1911 Oregon Trunk Railroad by-passed Shaniko, condemning town to slow death. Fires took toll of many buildings never rebuilt. Adding to present revival of old Shaniko - Ed Martin - has built new post office in nostalgic turn of century style. Grand opening was exactly 73 years later. Building also houses office of Shaniko Historical Museum |
