Chief Pokagon, the last of the great Chiefs of the Potawatomi Tribe, was born at Pokagon Village six miles north of South Bend, Indiana in 1830. By treaty, Chief Pokagon sold one million acres of land to the Government, including the present site of Chicago, Illinois for 3 cents an acre.
