COG ROAD ENGINE
One of the surprising feats of modern railroad
building is the Cog Road, built from Manitou to
the summit of Pike's Peak. The road pushes
steadily upward a distance of fifteen miles, gain- Nine
ing an elevation of 8,000 feet in its climb. Not
the least interesting are the specially constructed
engines which are used to push the trains to the
summit. These engines have been so perfectly
constructed that such a thing as an accident in
the ascent or descent is impossible.
The type of locomotive
that climbs Pikes Peak.
They push the cars instead
of pulling then, and are
not connected to the carts
in any way. They make the
climb in a little over
an hour and a half.
