Died September 21, 1904
Chief Joseph, credited with being the greatest
military chieftain in American history. No other
leader, who without source of supplies, guns, and
ammunition-fought 18 major and minor engage-
ments in 3/2 months covering over 1,500 miles
of rough territory, with more than half his tribe
composed of non-combatants. In every battle ex-
cept two, his fighting force was outnumbered
from two to four times. Surrendered Oct. 5th,
1877.
