BODIE, CALIFORNIA. Located 18 miles northeast of
beautiful Mono Lake, at an altitude of 8,374 feet, this
famous old mining town once boasted a population of
over 10,000 and a reputation for being the wildest of all
High Sierra gold camps. Wm. S. Bodie, after whom the
town was named, first found gold here in 1859. Subse-
quently, over $25,000,000 was taken from this region.
The few remaining historic buildings here survived the
disastrous fire of 1932--R.D.
