Life in a Hopi village is different from that in
other Indian villages. Among the Hopi marri-
age by purchase does not exist; the choice of a
life companion is left almost entirely to the couple
contemplating the marriage. The social status
of the Hopi maiden is known by the way she
dresses her hair, - two enormous whorls indicate
the single woman, but when they marry the whorls
are undone and the hair loosened and tied with
a knot on each side of the head.
