Built in 1718 by Franciscan Monks. Texas under
Six Flags-French, 1685; Spanish, 1690: Mexico,
1821-36; Texas, 1836-46; Confederate, 1861-65;
Union, 1865. Blue bonnets the Texas flower. At
the battle of the Alamo, the Texan force consisted
of some 180 odd men, commanded by Col. Wm. B.
Travis, and including Bonham, Crockett, Bowie, and,
afterwards, Sam Houston avenged the terrible massa-
cre, at the battle of San Jacinto, on April 21, 1836,
near Houston, Texas. "Remember the Alamo," the
battle cry. "Thermopylae had its messenger of defeat:
The Alamo had none."
