OAKLAND-ALAMEDA COUNTY COLISEUM
Home of the Oakland A's, 1968-present
A DREAM LONG-AWAITED — Actually, the seeds of a dream to
construct the Oakland Coliseum can be traced back to 1945. An
Oakland Chamber of Commerce Sports and Recreation Commit-
tee envisioned a municipal stadium as a magnet to attract a major
league baseball team to the city. Nearby, the Oakland Oaks of the
PCL had been playing in aging but cozy Emeryville Park since
1913. Although the committee supported the stadium plan, the
voters didn't. Years past, and the dream of a simple stadium
eventually grew to a multi-purpose facility plus an indoor arena for
cultural and sporting events, supported by community leaders.
The plan took substance on Feb. 13, 1962, when this scale model
was unveiled. The dream was finally coming true.
