The Mayo family has been a professional fam-
ily since the 16th century. William Worrall
Mayo, born May 31, 1819 in Manchester, Eng.
land, first arrived in Minnesota in 1855, moving
to Rochester in 1863. The inspiration of the
Clinic dates to the time of the cyclone in 1883,
although the first portion of the present build.
ing did not come into being until 1914.
