The Arkansas War Memorial Building on West
Markham Street was the State Capitol until 1911.
The building was started in 1833 and completed
in 1843 at a cost of $125,000.00. The first state
legislature met here in 1836, prior to the com-
pletion of the building. By a legislative resolution
in 1921, it became a War Memorial, recognized as
one of the most beautiful ante bellum structures in
the South.
