The Old Parris House, Danvers, Mass. Danvers was cut off from Salem in the year 1732. The witchcraft horror, historically connected with Salem, really originated in this house in Danvers, five miles distant from the Salem of to-day. It lasted about six months, from the first accusations in March, 1692, to the last executions in September. Nineteen persons were hanged and one man, Giles Corey, was pressed to death; the only instance where this old English penalty for refusing to plead was enforced in New England. Eight persons were hanged on Gallows Hill Sept. 22nd, the last to occur in the Colony. This old house was demolished many years ago; a stone now marks the site |
