One of the greatest and most sensational flights on record was that of M. Louis Paulhan's from London to Manchester at the end of April, 1910, by which he won the "Daily Mail" prize of L10,000. This munificent cheque was presented to the fortunate recipient in a golden casket. The journey was made in two stages on a Farman biplane. Mr. Farman (a naturalized Frenchman of English parentage) came to England to watch the flight, and as an aviator himself decidedly stands in front rank. Many of his flying experiments were originally performed in the Voisin machine, but he eventually perfected a machine of his own which proved its reliability in long-distance flights |
