Begun in 1829, and named for Gen. Thomas Sumter, the 'Gamecock' of the Revolution. First shots of the Civil War were directed at the steamer "Star of the West" as it attempted to bring troops and provisions to the fort. Fort is most famous for withstanding the longest bombardment in modern history. The fort is open daily to the public.
