Montezuma Castle, the best-preserved cliff
dwelling in the United States and one of the
most spectacular of its type, was built in part
probably as early as 1100 A. D., and probably
was deserted by 1425 A. D. It had no con-
nection with Montezuma, leader of the Aztecs.
Its name is a misnomer which seems to have
been bestowed by early white visitors.
