Congress, Washington, D.C., is imposing in
size and effective in architectural design. It
is 100 feet in diameter and 125 feet in height.
The pillars are 40 feet high and the windows
32 feet wide. Its walls, tiers of arches, pillars
and balustrades are of yellow and red marble;
the red coming from Tennessee and Numidia,
the yellow from Siena. This view is from the
Visitors' Gallery the railing of which is sur.
mounted by sixteen bronze statues, eight of
which are of characters distinguished in the
several fields of learning and achievement;
the other eight being statues symbolic of these
characters.
