Crossing Utah's Salt Desert
Additional Details:
The Bonneville Salt Flats are the South-Western fringe of the Great Salt lake. When water covers it in the winter and spring, it becomes soggy and unfit for racing; drying out rapidly it becomes very hard and rigid, supporting great weight. It is 40 miles across this great Salt Desert from east to west, Knolls Utah, to Wendover. The Western Pacific R.R. and high-way 40-50 run parallel over this huge expanse, with the exception of one slight offset curve the high-way is straight as an arrow. Thousands of tourists stop every year to exaine and gather some of the salt along the road-side; many staying over at Wendover during the racing periods, driving over to the course to watch the runs being made
