THE DE YOUNG MEMORIAL MUSEUM
The de Young Memorial Museum in Golden Gate
Park is the best possible monument of the public
spirit of the people of San Francisco. It has never
had a purchasing fund, and yet, beginning with a
small collection bought with proceeds of the Cali-
fornia Midwinter International Exposition held in
the Park in 1894, it has grown by loan and gift
until it comprises works of art, and specimens of
the crafts valued at many million dollars, and relics
and documents that are beyond all price. Much of
this success was possible because of the personal
interest and gifts of the late M. H. de Young.
