Bottom view: Gavins Point Dam, built of compacted earth, extends 8,700 feet across the Missouri River Valley. Lewis and Clark Lake extends 25 miles upstream, covers 32,000 acres and stores 520,000 acre-feet of water at maximum operating pool level. Construction of Gavins Point Dam was started in 1952 and completed in 1955
