THE OLD TIP TOP HOUSE: The oldest struc-
ture now standing on the summit of Mt. Washing-
ton. Erected in 1858. Has sheltered world-famous
men. Now stands close beside the great Summit
House, an object of interest to thousands who visit
the summit. Summit first gained in 1682; mountain
named, 1784: first shelter for tourists, 1821; first
horse climbed up, 1840; locomotive followed, 1869.
