"THE STRAITS OF MACKINAC"
Michigan State Ferry, at winter quarters in St.
Ignace, Michigan. One of the earliest State ferries
operating between St. Ignace and Mackinaw City,
still in operation. The word “Mackinac” (formerly
Michilimackinac) has an Indian derivative meaning
variously "Place of Spirits” and “The Great Turtle."
