Rutgers University was founded in 1766 as Queen's College. It was established by the Dutch settlers of New Jersey who desired a college of their own at which to educate their sons. In 1825 the name of the college was changed to Rutgers in honor of Col. Henry Rutgers of New York, a benefactor of the Institution. Rutgers became the Land Grant College of New Jersey under the Morrell Act in 1864 and in 1917, Rutger was designated as the State University of New Jersey Curt Teich & Co |
