SEQUOY AH High-set amid the forest-covered hills, Near by a mountain stream flows swiftly past, And here one short summer we banished care, Steep ridges sloping up on either hand Threads shady hollows dark with evergreen, Cast off the burdens of our life in school, With rocky vantage places which command Then meets the sunlight in a sparkling sheen, Played in the woods, swam in the mirrored pool, Wide sweeps of mountains robed in purple hue, Or whitens into foam among the rocks, Enchanted by the magic of the wild, Which fades afar to meet the sky's light blue, All moss-encrusted, which the passage blocks, While bracing breezes whispered soft and mild Here lies Sequoyah, guarded by the hills.
