This mound was built by the early Indians.
Here they moved their families, stock and house-
hold belongings to safety each time the Mississip
pi overflowed its banks. The mound was origi:
nally, much larger, but was cut to its present of P 5
size by the Federal Government when establish-
ing the National Military Cemetery in 1863. 947
